Sitting Or Standing Desk With Cast Iron Base And Custom-made Upcycled Top

One-of-a-kind vintage industrial table. The unique cast iron base is height- and tilt-adjustable. Unusually for these types of tables, the adjustments can be easily done single-handedly and without much strength or effort.

The tilt is limited to a 90-degree angle. Given that the top swivels, it creates the illusion of a full 180.

The large crank adjusts the height smoothly, and a smaller winged nut ensures stability. The nut construction implies that the base has been made by Frederick post, and there are no markings. The sturdiness and cast iron date it to sometime around 1920.

The one-of-a-kind top is exciting as well—it was made from repurposed railcar flooring that served its duties. We originally sourced the flooring from one of our Chicago-based non-profits, rebuilding exchange. Sarah, one of our team members, then took a carpentry class there to create this unique top.

It has a similar structure to butcher block and is made of heavy sturdy old-growth wood restored to perfect imperfection. The holes were filled with epoxy, so while there is plenty of character left, it feels smooth to the touch.

The top measures 33.25 × 29.75 and is over an inch thick.

Overall height with the top positioned horizontally goes from 35.75 to over 45 inches.
